9 Winter Holidays Around the World

Winter is one of the most beautiful of the year and people love and prefer it over the others. When we winter we think of relaxing and chilling while cocooned or wrapped inside the blanked and all about eating dry fruits etc but this perception is wrong because this cold time of the year is about celebrating traditional, cultural as well religious events.

As we all know that December is the month in which winter usually occurs in many countries so winter holidays are also said December global holidays.

Following are the winter holidays that are celebrated across the globe:

  1. Hanukka

  2. Three kings day

  3. Winter Solstice

  4. St. Lucia day

  5. St. Nicholas day

  6. Christmas

  7. Kwanzaa

  8. New year 

  9. Mardi gras

1: Hannukah:

It is an event of the Jewish community also known as the “festival of lights”. Chanuka is a Hebrew word that means enthusiasm or dedication, this event is celebrated to commemorate the hews who saved their holy temples.

2: Three kings day:

This festival is for almost 12 days which is celebrated after Christmas is known as Three kings day. People from different countries have different ways of celebrating like in Spain children get their Christmas gifts and in France, a huge cake termed as King cake is baked to celebrate this amazing festival.

3: Winter Solstice:

This event is marked on the 21st of December as the shortest day of the year which was celebrated by igniting bonfires in past. 

4: St. Lucia day:

It is a feast day for the Christian community in the respect of an early Christian martyr St. Lucy. People provide food to the poor or needy people at night while wearing a white coat and shining lights over their heads.

5: St. Nicholas day:

This day is celebrated on the 6th of December to pay tribute to St. Nicholas of Myra who spend all of his money on needy people and children because he was motivated by the father of Christmas. So, it’s a public holiday on his death anniversary in many European countries. 

6: Christmas:

It is an annual festival of Christians who delightfully celebrate the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ which is 25th December. People enjoy it by decorating their houses, streets, and areas with Christmas lights or trees and having family gatherings together. 

7: Kwanzaa:

An African event begins from 26th December to 1st January celebrated especially in the United States. This event was started by Maulana Karenga as a custom to greet the first harvesting crop. 

8: New year:

The new year is celebrated on the 31st of December and people make a man of straw as a representative of the previous year and paste a chit over it after writing faults and burn that man at night assuming that all the faults are also burnt.

9: Mardi gras:

A Tuesday before lent starts, people across the world celebrate it by wearing different sorts of costumes and attending parades and in England people participate in multiple contests also to make this event more interesting and memorable.
